Q. What is the purpose of The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation's grants?
A. The grants are intended to provide immediate financial aid to the families and/or personnel that are injured or killed in the line of duty. The grants are intended to cover the immediate expenses that arise in times of crisis. The funds are intended to be a short duration benefit and are not intended as long term support. The grants help cover the time between the incident and the establishment of more permanent monetary benefits that may be available from various other sources.
Q. How does one apply for injury or death grants?
A. In the case of a death or injury of a Texas Peace Officer (as defined by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education, TCLEOSE) or the death or injury of a Texas Firefighter, grants must be submitted by the department the individual was working for at the time of the incident.
Q. How does one apply for educational grants?
A. In the case of an educational grant and other benefits are not available, the Fleetwood Memorial Foundation will consider a grant to retrain the injured personnel if they are officially (by QUALIFIED medical opinion) declared permanently unable to perform the duties of their previous employment as a peace officer or firefighter. The amount of each grant will be considered on an individual basis by The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation.
Q. How does one apply for higher educational grants for dependent children of Texas peace or fire personnel killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty?
A. Educational grants will be considered by The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation for students that qualify under Chapter 54 ,Sections 54.204 or Section 54. 2041 Texas Education Code for the State of Texas. Basically, Chapter 54 Sections 54.204& 54. 2041 provide for a waiver of fees and tuition from Texas universities for the dependent children of any Texas peace and fire personnel killed or disabled in the line of duty. The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation grants will provide funds for a portion of their living expenses as long as the student meets the qualifications under Chapter 54,Sections 54.204 & 54.2041 of the Texas Education Code as is the student does not have to attend a state supported institution to be considered for a grant. The amount of the grant considered may change from time to time by a decision of the Executive Committee of the Fleetwood Memorial Foundation. The full text on Chapter 54 ,Sections 54.204 & 54.2041 of the Texas Education Code can be found under "LINKS" on the home page of this web site or by going to the official web site of the State of Texas and searching for the Texas Education Code.
Q. What is considered in the line of duty?
A. The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation considers grants for death and injuries that are as a result of the hazardous nature of the duties of peace and fire personnel. "Line of Duty" does not automatically mean just "on duty". No injuries considered normal Worker's Compensation will be considered (such as; slip and fall not related to hazardous nature of the duty, strains from normal exercise and vehicle accidents not related to hazardous duties).
Q. What are the amounts of monetary grants for a death or injury in the line of duty?
A. The amount of each grant considered by The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation can change from time to time. The fluctuation could be because of the family circumstance of the injured or deceased personnel. For instance, the death of a peace officer that had no immediate family would not generate as much grant consideration as an officer that had an immediate family of a spouse and two children. Each grant application is considered independently based on the unique nature of the grant request. The amount of each grant could be effected by the varying amounts available for grants from The Fleetwood Memorial Foundation Grant Fund.
